This film
came about while Sherry Teleky Waple was attending her Criminal
Justice Organization and Administration course at the Harrisburg
Area Community College (HACC). For this class, each group
(which consists of 3 students) must develop either a correctional
facility or police department from ground up. The students
must determine every factor that would be needed. Sherry Teleky
Waple was in a group with Carrie Rutter and Jacinto Valetine III.
This group definitely had the advantage because Jacinto is a correctional
officer at a local prison. Part of the grade would be the
content and the other part would be the presentation of this project.
Professor Petyak stated that the students must "sell"
their new facility.
At
this point there were two groups developing a police department
and two groups developing correctional facilities. The opposing
correctional facility group brought a "challenge" to Sherry,
Carrie and Jacinto's group, stating that their group's project and
presentation would put Sherry, Carrie & Jacinto's project to
shame. Carrie Rutter remembered from the first night of class
that Sherry Teleky Waple stated that she was a filmmaker in her
spare time. She knew that the other group could not touch
them in the presentation if they presented it as a film. Thus,
Quest for Bruno County Correctional Facility began.

About
the Production
Sherry
Teleky Waple met with the group and they decided to set the presentation
up as a news conference. At this news conference, the town
councilman and county commissioners would answer the questions
of the concerned citizens and reporters. Sherry would pen
the script with questions and answers that the group decided.
(A small piece of trivia regarding the script - Sherry is a huge
Bruce Willis fan and all the characters in this projected were
characters that Bruce Willis played at one point in his career
or a variation of his characters). Sherry inquired with
Advisor Petyak and Professor Eppley in the drama department at
HACC about acquiring cast and crew for this project since it was
a student project. With the help of Professor Eppley cast/crew
calls were posted throughout the campus and word spread fast.
The
first contact came from Robert Haag who was a tremendous help
in this project. He spread the word through pafilms.com
and with this resource, the cast was acquired. Cheryl Scungio,
who was cast as the lead in Sherry's short film "Obsession"
was honored when Sherry called upon her again for another project
and was cast in the lead female role in this project as well.
Sherry turned to her dependable crew for some help.
Dan Scully, Mike Henry and Kelsey Teleky were again very supportive
and assisted in this student project. Carrie Rutter stepped
up to the plate and acted as a production assistant and helped
Kelsey in the script supervisory capacity.
It was
decided from the beginning that the shoot would take place at
the front steps of the Harrisburg Capitol Building. Sherry
acquired permission from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to shoot
on the steps and a date of October 21, 2007 was set.
The cast arrived at
8am to a beautiful autumn day. Sherry had taken location
photos the week before so all that needed to be done was to run
through the shots with the crew. Upon a sound check, it
was discovered that a piece was missing for the boom, so Dan Scully
was kind enough to run to Middletown to retrieve the piece.
At this point, the cast began to arrive and it was obvious that
the shoot would not start on time at 9am.
With
all the cast present, Sherry decided to do a dry run. She
wanted to run straight through, from start to finish, just like
a press conference would be done. No cuts would be called
unless due to technical issues. During the dry run, Sherry
directed the cast to exactly what she wanted and they followed
her instructions with the utmost professionalism.
Finally,
20 minutes later, Dan returned with the missing audio part and
the shoot began. A total of 6 takes were shot, each with
different angles. Since Sherry decided to give the cast
some improv abilities, she wanted to be sure to capture all of
their reactions. This cast did extremely well at both the
scripted material and the improv aspects of this project.
Front
start to finish the entire shoot took four hours. The tapes
were handed off to yet another faithful crew member, Dan Shaffer,
who would edit the final piece together. Dan worked with
Sherry on both "Obsession" and the documentary "Blue
Raiders: Fury On Ice".
Many
thanks to the cast and crew for their support in this project.
We could not have done it without all of you!
